Villa D1 is a private residential project located in Paje, Zanzibar. The design responds to the constraints of a compact plot surrounded by neighboring properties, turning inward to create a sense of openness and calm.
The house is organized around an internal garden that acts as the visual and spatial center of the home. Living areas open directly onto this green space, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior while ensuring privacy from the surrounding context.
The layout places the main living spaces on the ground floor, with bedrooms oriented to capture the prevailing breeze and morning light. Natural ventilation, shading devices, and local materials are integrated throughout to ensure comfort in the tropical climate.
The architectural language draws from the local building tradition while introducing contemporary spatial qualities—generous ceiling heights, framed views, and a careful balance between solid and void.
